The Music Void – George Ergatoudis on MUZU.
This guy is brilliant! His age and/or “background” has nothing to do with his “ear” for music or ability to FIND the gold! (Remember Clive Davis?) Mr. Ergatoudis has proven that, in addition to having genuine PASSION for what he does, he’s smart enough to LISTEN to specialists who know EXACTLY what the “young music listeners really want.” George is the DB!
This guy talks a good talk but the elephant in the room is that radio is dying in its current broadcast form. DAB is just another broadcast medium so it is also dying.
Found it amusing to hear him talking about business models given he comes from the beeb where they must have little experience of free business models. But the reality is that young people want a free choice of music to sample or try out when and where they like and broadcast radio doesn’t provide this.
George must be in his mid 40s so presumably he doesn’t want to rock the boat too much so that his final salary pension is safe. You’ve got to wonder how someone with this background can truly know what the young music listeners really want.
He claims to control the daytime playlist but, lets face it, that’s just used by many as musical wallpaper whether driving or in the workplace etc. There also seems to be some genre bias going on from what I’ve heard probably due to this guys background at 1Xtra.
Maybe it’s time to replace this guy with someone younger and more in tune with what the new generation really want, then Radio 1 could grow and evolve into something great again.
nice guy – seems switched on
lucky for him he’s at subsidised auntie
