New Sony Music CEO Sings Same Old Song
As you all know, Doug Morris’ migration to Sony was first reported here and since then I’ve tried to keep informed on the latest scuttlebutt. I also reported that Morris doesn’t make a move without his doppelganger Mel Lewinter.
Here’s the latest on what will be Morris’ first move as CEO of Sony Music. Septuagenarian Morris is set to begin his new job on July 1. Coincidentally, Lewinter is scheduled to retire from Universal Music on…July 1. Sources say that Morris is contractually prohibited from stealing any UMG execs, so Lewinter will be hired by Sony as a “consultant” in order to get around the legalities.
Morris is famously know for always keeping “his guys” around him. If the terms of his contract are correct, it may be a little harder for Dougie to repeat his past success, as he won’t be able to rely on the same guys anymore. L.A. Reid is suddenly available and could certainly take over for Barry Weiss at RCA/Jive, but I understand from my sources inside the company that everyone is shaking in their boots about losing their jobs.
The question is ”Who will be the next deckchair that Morris tries to bring to Sony”?
