Vice President, Media Systems Technology, The Walt Disney Studios – LA
The VP Media Systems Technology is responsible for managing the media systems infrastructure for The Walt Disney Studios. This position oversees and provides technical leadership for: infrastructure systems, networks and storage; software development that enables media production and distribution workflows as well as applications that support digital asset management. This position requires an individual who can build and execute a strong technology strategy, as well as manage the organization that develops and supports these applications. The VP Media Systems Technology will work with peers and customers to create more efficient media workflow processes designed to take advantage of emerging digital asset management techniques and reduce the costs of managing digital assets.
As part of the technology executive team, this role requires an experienced perspective based on business and organizational transformation, active collaboration, agility, technical excellence and the ability to successfully partner with and advise senior business and technology leaders.
In close partnership with line-of-business technology executives, develop investment strategies and implementation priorities aligned with rapidly evolving business requirements. Identify emerging business models and functional requirements and integrate into a high-performance, but cost-efficient infrastructure portfolio.
Collaborate with line-of-business executives to analyze existing, often manual, media workflow processes – from on-set film-making to final archive – with a goal of designing agile automation solutions which reduce or eliminate avoidable bottlenecks, manual handling, errors and delays related to producing and sharing media assets world-wide.
Oversee the design, implementation and 24×7 operation of metro, domestic and global media network and transport infrastructure to enable secure, high-performance creative collaboration and asset delivery.
Provide end-user-facing application solutions and technical support for staff engaged in media creation and manipulation.
Collaborate with other Disney media segments (e.g., Media Networks, Pixar, DAS, etc.) to integrate and leverage infrastructure, asset management, workflow automation, talent and operational practices among these segments and the Disney Studio.
Design, implement and maintain an effective, efficient organizational structure to successfully support current and future business strategies. Lead change management activities and provide strong leadership to the engineering teams by encouraging diversity of thought, focusing on employee development and performance, and ensuring teams continually acquire new technology and management skills.
Oversee and negotiate vendor relationships, specifically focusing on visual effects and post-production around the world.
Working in close partnership with line-of-business executives, develop rules-based digital asset management solutions and roadmaps that are responsive to the Studios’ growth and evolving business models.
Work with Enterprise I.T. to optimally align Corporate infrastructure services to suit the special needs of the Studio lines of business. Define and negotiate SLA’s with EIT-managed suppliers, as well as the various Studio Technology groups, and oversee performance to SLA.
10. Manage the relevant audit, standards and governance bodies, monitoring and compliance of security policies, backup and disaster recovery systems, etc.
11. Manage budgets and processes to reduce redundancies and control costs. Optimize costs of services through a mix of internal and external resources.
Desired Skills & Experience
15+ years experience in media operations, enterprise-scale infrastructure operations, strategic planning, management of multi-disciplinary technology organizations and/or business applications and systems.
Significant experience in restructuring and implementing new technology/process improvement.
Strong leadership, management and experience in facilitating change management. Leading engineering teams that span, transactional and middleware software engineering, audio/visual/editorial engineering, end user technical support and massively-scaled data center infrastructure. Ability to motivate teams to produce quality results within challenging timeframes and ongoing change.
Effective communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Extensive knowledge of contracting and negotiating for business applications.
Experience with implementation of complex application implementations and integrations in a large company.
Budget preparation and monitoring.
Bachelor’s degree in CS, IT, EE or equivalent experience. An advanced degree is desirable.
