While this might show the revenue and sales are climbing the fact is the numbers are being progressively concentrated into progressively more mainstream artists who have the (generally label-backed) clout to get into every commercial crevasse in radio, TV and online. The more self-made artists out there like The White Stripes, Beastie Boys etc are making less and less than ever – forced out by the further McDonald’s-ification of mainstream radio/TV.
The more popular you want to be, the more homogenised and aimed-at-the-masses you must be to succeed now. It’s putting the thumb on true creative talent except that which is more akin to an advertising agency style effort than a talented artists making a breakthrough doing something different.
This is dope. Proof that the music industry is not dying at all because of piracy and digital music. The major labels and gatekeepers of the music world need to embrace technology instead of continuing to fight it.
