That's like saying there are too many radio stations or record stores. If there was just one service, the corporate pushed music would dominate at the expense of the others. The more the merrier for the artists, especially unsigned ones.

Bobx,

There is nothing in my post suggesting competitors in this space are stupid for competing. All I say is that Australia does not have the population to sustain so many streaming services and that it is highly likely quite a few of them will fall by the wayside in this market within 12 - 18 months. Nothing more nothing less.

Jakomi,
Your article is spot on. As far as I’m concerned, streaming services should be restricted to music more than 10-years old (no new releases) or be outlawed, period. They are a low overhead high profit margin business that steals from the artists by paying a mere fraction (if at all) of the performance royalties due. The next greed bubble. They have done well at convincing the youth market that music is free and all you have to do is a pay a nominal subscription fee; but then they get the telecom bill. Surprise. Nothing is free. And don’t blame the record companies; I don't believe they share in that revenue stream.
If you don’t like the telecom expense, how about buying the CD or download? 99¢ a song. That’s 1000 songs a month. And you don’t put the artist out of business.
Again, these streamers (along with Wal-Mart) and their customers are ripping off the artist, big time.

No. A choice is good.

I have resubscribed to Pandora.com on top of my Sony Music Unlimited subscription. Pandora will play a radio like stream I have little little control over whilst Music Unlimited allows me to focus on an album or a song like my own library.

Some people won't like Sony on ethical grounds, they are free to choose another like Spotify, although I feel that Sean's Parker (the creator of Napster) doesn't pay enough per stream to the artists. Plus of course his need for Farcebook signin.
