Vice President of Engineering – Rdio in SF

Your Mission…
Believing in the art-of-the-impossible, your role knows no bounds. Your broad facility with technologies, languages, tools and methodologies should serve you well here. Reporting to the CTO, (the guy who built engineering from the ground up), your mission is to lead Rdio’s expansion of web and mobile offerings, giving users an un-paralleled music experience. You’ll add just enough process to assure quick and quality development, without stifling creativity. You’ll strengthen the infrastructure to allow for expansive growth, and build your team of 45 to about 60 engineers by year-end. When done well, you and your team will be the true secret to Rdio’s success!
Your Responsibilities…
The main focus for this VP is leadership in all things people and technology. This means:
Gaining trust & credibility from staff while setting clear expectations and holding engineers accountable
Providing care and feeding to Rdio’s four engineering teams (front-end, back-end, tech ops, and program mgt)
Being a role model by keeping your hands dirty in the code (when needed) and fostering a hacker mentality
Driving the teams to reach optimal performance & output that assures on-time and on-budget completion of objectives
Exploring new technologies to create robust, scalable & award-winning web and mobile apps
Contributing to Rdio’s strategic business sense & product direction by weighing in at the Management Team level
Striking that ever-delicate balance of new product features vs customer requirements, & having the cajones to just say “no”

We’re looking for an Engineering Rock Star!
Our ideal is an executive who’s technologically agnostic, still loves to code, plus:
10 years in B2C, consumer-facing, e.commerce environments where accelerated growth is never-ending
5 years leading engineering teams of 40+ staffers in a SAAS environment
Charismatic, hands-on leader who delivers high-quality products / harnesses team strengths / maximizes productivity
A straight-shooting, proactive communicator who knows when to praise and when to push
A natural hacker and polyglot, you still enjoy coding in your spare time and are passionate about learning new technologies.
Rdio speaks Python, Java, Obj-C, C#, JavaScript, Erlang, among other dialects. They use whatever suits the job, instead of making the job suit the language. On the web, Audio streaming uses Flash/HTML5 with an HTML/CSS front-end. They also do native front-ends and audio.
