LoveLive/Transgressive/Rockfeedback’s Founder Toby Langley (VIDEO)
Toby Langley, known colloquially as Toby L, started interviewing bands in the UK when he was just fifteen years old. It was the year 2000, and the website Rockfeedback was born. In 2004, Toby and his partner, Tim Dellow, went on to form Transgressive, a record label, management and publishing house, and are working/have worked with artists including Foals, Dry the River, Jodie Marie, Mystery Jets, Johnny Flynn, Noisettes and many more.
In 2009, Langley and Dellow joined forces with LoveLive, to develop music content and services for brands, broadcasters and platforms. Since then, LoveLive have been popping up everywhere, producing integrated campaigns for companies including Ford, BT, Google, XBox, Spotify and tons more. Their broad brief allows them to do everything from hosting sponsored nights at London music venues to curating the BT stage in Hyde Park during the Olympic Games. LoveLive is also collaborating with YouTube, recently livestreaming Plan B’s London album launch event as well as Madonna’s Paris Olympia performance (part of YouTube and Google’s anticipated move into content development).
TMV’s Laura Thorne spoke with Toby last week at the Lexington Pub in King’s Cross, London, in part one of a two-part interview. As the staff prepared to open for the day, Toby discussed the evolution of LoveLive, strategy when working with new clients, and why he occasionally wears a lab coat to meetings.
Part two of our interview next week. Also stay tuned for a conversation with LoveLive’s CEO Richard Cohen, looking at the YouTube partnership in greater detail.
